E. Liz Downing's art career started by painting the walls of her family's business, the Heart of Dixie Motel. She studied art at Auburn University in Alabama and then graduate school at the Maryland Institute of Art in Baltimore, studying under Grace Hartigan. She is a co-founder of the musical / performance art groups Lambs Eat Ivy, Radiant Pig, Girls' Ranch, and Lurch & Holler. Liz created the sets and costumes for these touring productions. Her groups have performed nationally in venues including: The Whitney, The Hirshorn, The Baltimore Museum of Art, Corcoran School of Art, Intersection for the Arts in San Francisco and the Walker Museum in Minneapolis. Liz has been the recipient of grants such as the National Endowment for the Arts, Franklin Furnace Interdisciplinary Arts and New York's Wooster Group's Performing Garage. Currently she lives in Baltimore, MD where she composes music and paints.
